I know these awards show gown ratings lists can be tedious and shallow
- but listen up, TheFind readers! This could be your last and and only
red carpet glamour opportunity, so we might as well indulge in it while
we can. With the Writers Guild still on strike we don't know if the
Oscar show will even happen - let alone up the glamour ante. Here's my
list for the ladies who looked truly outstanding on Sunday night - and
these are the looks you'll want to be emulating when you go to all
those summer weddings in a few months.
10. Keisha Whitaker: The
Oscar winner's ex-model wife looked more than pretty in very pale pink
-a pale flower of a color for her Jenny Packham gown with tiny chiffon
pleating. Look for pale pink and peaches to make a big black tie
statement this spring.
9. Rebecca Gayheart: Her lipstick red strapless Marchesa gown was well-matched with a high ponytail that made it look like a cross between "Valley of the Dolls" and "Rome." She wisely didn't load the look down with a necklace, but did long earrings, and didn't over-gussy her gorgeous dress.
8. America Ferrera: TV's "Ugly Betty" has often chosen deep blues and greens on the red carpet- but her smokey grey one shouldered chiffon and lace Monique L'hullier gown was so flattering with her dark hair and really set off her lips and eyes to great effect. Guess what? Ugly Betty is NOT at all ugly - and grey is always graceful, day or night. For spring, pick lighter shades of the smokey subtle neutral hue -and play it up with dark pink lips.
7. Ellen Page: We're so happy to see the 20 year old "Juno" star and Oscar nominee chose a young designer - Zac Posen - and a young look: a black chic fluttery cap sleeved dress to the knees and fresh straight hair. Young girls shouldn't wear gowns -they get overwhelmed. Ellen made a really lovely age-appropriate choice.
6. Sara Ramirez: the Grey's Anatomy co-star isn't known for her fashion choices -and she's far from a sample size two. But in her fuschia crossed with lavender Angel Sanchez strapless fishtail mermaid dress -highly fitted then flaring out in old Hollywood style - she crossed the line into fashionista territory. Attention brunettes everywhere: pinks and purples and fuschias are the way to go for spring.
5. Kyra Sedgwick: While many of the blonde actresses who showed up at the SAGS did the old school style of big blonde locks and pale sparkly dresses, Sedgwick took the opposite route: she slinked into a deep blue L'Wren Scott beautiful bombshell cut dress, and tucked her hair back to let the dress shine. When you're wearing a strong color, it's good to play down hair, makeup and jewelry, as Kyra did. (And L'Wren Scott is the former stylist to Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Sarah Jessica Parker, so she sure knows how to cut a dress. Her small collection is at Barneys.)
4. Cate Blanchett: How many actresses can wear prints on the red carpet? And how many pregnant ones could? Cate Blanchett breaks all the fashion rules and creates new ones - and she always has. We loved her in a black, white, green and pink print strapless Balenciaga. Look for big and small prints in black tie dresses and cocktail this spring.
3. Debra Messing: She's always red carpet ready, but her gold and encrusted Oscar de la Renta Roman-style gown -with incredible unusual necklace-neck detail on the gown - was just breathtaking with her red wavy hair. The girl just gets it!!! Neck detail like that will even be on t-shirts this summer.
2. Kate Beckinsale in Luisa Beccaria: You don't hear much about this Italian designer but her clothes are really stunning. And Kate really wore this pale buttercup tiered gown to perfection - with much of her waved hair pulled back into a loose low ponytail, to show off the dress color against her skin.
and a TIE FOR NUMBER ONE!!!!
ANGELINA JOLIE IN VINTAGE HERMES: Angelina gradated chocolate and vanilla goddess gown is not like any gown she's worn before. She's known for her slinky whites or blacks and never wears anything loose -so this Roman style soft flowing dress with tons of chiffon ombred fabric had tongues wagging that she might actully be pregnant. Pregnant or not -she was a vision of loveliness, and unique in every way. Prada and many other designers did ombred and faded fabrics in their spring collections, and this should make sure they become really hot.
AND
ELLEN POMPEO IN NINA RICCI by Olivier Theyskens: Pompeo always wears cutting edge designers to the hilt, trying out new looks before other actresses have ever heard of them. No wonder - her stylist is the amazing Andrea Lieberman, who dressed Jennifer Lopez for years. The silvery Nina Ricci was fragmented like a diamond, cut and shiney like a jewel. It looks like metallics just aren't going away for a while. Silver is always a stunner.
