THECLICK'S CHICKLIST:TOP TEN TRENDS AT THE SAG AWARDS
1. Big wavy hair: Kate Beckinsale, Eva Longoria, Debra Messing, Glenn Close, Christina Applegate all donned curvy retro waves - that ironed stick straight lanky look REEKS of yesterday, as James Carville might say.
2. Sweet and Lowdown: Low low cut strapless gowns (even
Glenn Close's Armani) and one shoulder dresses (America Ferrera in
Monique L'hullier) were everywhere -and they showed lots of well cared
for skin and decollete to their best advantage, Question is: how do
they keep those dresses up? The answer: corsets.
3. Tiny Prints:
Cate Blanchett and Kate Hudson both wore swirly small prints, but they
were subtle enough not to interrupt their beauty
4. Jewelry: No necklaces - and dangly diamond earrings: Remember those layered necklaces, one a tiny bit longer than the next? Remember chokers? Well, forget all that. Jewelry focus is now on chunky bracelets, cocktail rings, and small thin dangly earrings -or flower clustered studs. The jewelry near the face is delicate -the the jewelry near the hands is oversized. When there were jewels at the neck, they were attached to the gowns -like Debra Messing's Oscar de la Renta.
5. Pale Makeup with Long Lashes: Gone are the crimson mouths of fall 07, and instead, at the SAG awards, we saw monochromatic faces in pale pinks and berryish neutrals - and sweepy long fluttery lashes that were absolutely not real -
6. Jackets and suiting: Tilda Swinton and
Julie Christie wore evening tuxedo looks that were handsome and elegant
and chic. Why can't women do the tux look at night and still be sexy?
We think Yves St.Laurent would back us up. We smell an fall 08 trend
coming on.
7. Ruching, gathering, draping, pleating: we didn't
see a gown (Vanessa Williams' yellow, Keisha Whitaker's pale pink Jenny
Packham, Diane Lane's Alberta Ferretti) that didn't flow, swoop, drape,
pleat or gather - these subtle shaping and soft tailoring devices are
what make these gowns give these women such great shape. Of course,
they also have great shapes to begin with.
8 Color: Kyra Sedgwick in deep blue. Kate Beckinsale and Vanessa Williams in buttery yellow. Rebecca Gayheart in red. Keisha Whitaker in pale pink. Diane Lane in forest green. Color is its own trend - and the ladies in black simply blended into the background.
9. Gradation of color: Angelina Jolie's caramel fade vintage Hermes gown and Diane Lane's pale green and dark green chiffon Alberta Ferretti proved that dark tones bleeding into paler tones can be eyepopping and powerful.
10. Cuff bracelets: They are everywhere and often - they are vintage, they are new, and they are often piled up. And they don't have to be made of Fred Leighton diamonds: go on TheFind and type in "cuffs" - they come in all sizes and shapes.
