Nature doesn’t care if it’s the height of the Sundance Film Festival – a blanket of fresh white powder hit the streets of Park City today, delighting the skiers, and causing celebs, pr reps, managers, producers and directors alike to slosh up the hills of Main Street, nearly toppling their soy lattes. Good thing Ugg Boots have good traction –even the new “Sandra” and “Felicity” styles with wedge heels.
Of course, the snow hasn’t put a damper on any of the evening activities. On Sunday night, Self Magazine co-hosted a party with The Harmony Project at the Park City Resort up in the mountains near the slopes – Moby performed, and Oliver Stone showed up, amongst others, to hear him breakout tunes from his upcoming release– and there were also those gettings massages and makeup by Origins- all in the same room! (It sounds weirder than it was.). Paris Hilton partied at Harry O’s, where Velvet Revolver got on stage – and how could Paris restrain herself from popping up there with them for all to see? Later on, the bobbed blond thrillseeker was spotted riding a ripping inner tube downhill on Main Street –then running up that hill again in high heels. There are triathalon athletes who couldn’t pull off that feat of snow sporting – particularly not in Sergio Rossi’s.
First stop on Day Four at Sundance was a visit from mogul/producer Ted Leonsis, vice chairman of AOL and producer of the Sundance movie “Kicking It.” It was interesting mixing a bit of Silicon Valley with all this Hollywood hoopla. Lauren Graham and Matthew Perry arrived next, promoting a movie called “Birds of America,” about preppy siblings, directed by “Prelude to a Kiss’s” Craig Lucas..Since Perry and Graham are old friends, they hammed it up together for an interview with People Magazine. “It’s sisterly love,” Graham noted. Perry, meanwhile, was confused about Sundance footwear. “I was wearing Converse when I got here yesterday, and today I’m wearing boots with laces – at least I’ve figured
something out."
The cast and conceivers of “In Prison My Whole,” Livia and Colin Firth, came by – and we were shocked and pleasantly surprised to learn that Mrs. Firth is as lovely and elegant as her husband. The stunning Italian was particularly excited to hear about and look at TheFindGreen, as she told us, “I’m putting my producing career on hold to go into retail” –she will open one of London’s only environmental retail outlets. Asked what it’s like to be married to a dreamboat, she quickly retorted, “You should ask Colin what it’s like to be married to ME!” She also wanted us to know about a new jewelry line in Britain called Fifi Bijoux, that is one of the first ethical and ecological lines of jewelry, imagined down to the mines the stones came out of.
Then, what happened next was sort of like an astrological confluence of the stars: David Arquette came by from “Hamlet2” with Steve Coogan, and Elizabeth Shue – Coogan bringing along girlfriend and L.A. socialite (and daughter of Michael Chow) China Chow. But at the exact same moment, the cast of “Downloading Nancy” – Maria Bello, Jason Patric, Rufus Sewell and Amy Brenneman charged in –and Brenneman brought super-publicist Stephen Huvane (pr for Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Anison, Demi Moore), showing up at the same time as super manager Jason Weinberg (Penelope Cruz, Naomi Watts, Hilary Swank, Demi Moore, Lindsay Lohan, Ashton Kutcher). They could have put together the cast and crew for “Gone With The Wind II” out of this group. “It’s the first time I’ve ever been here,” China Chow told us, in an Erin Featherston white wool hat. “I’ve never seen snow like this in my
life.”
When Amy Brenneman saw pals Maria Bello and Elisabeth Shue, there was a big trio of hugs going on. All the actors from both films convened on the couch, eating cookies and telling stories to each other. Jason Patric wanted to learn about TheFindGreen’s ecological products –and also wanted a recycled cashmere scarf – “cause I radically undressed."
Last but not least,
Mischa Barton did a stint for her movie “Assasination of a High School President.” Very blonde and wearing a top hat from Barneys, she told us, “The reason I’m so blond is that I just finished this movie ‘Homecoming,” and I haven’t been able to change my haircolor back yet!” She’ll be at Sundance for a day, then go home to L.A. to celebrate her birthday on Thursday, Jan 22. – while we’ll be here, hard at work at Sundance, with – well, the only part of Hollywood that’s still working. – MG

I'm really hoping that Merle reads the comments left here.
If so: Merle, it's Chip Coffey from A&E's "Paranormal State" ... and a "spirit" from your past! We were both students at Elmira College together. Remember the production of "The Hostage" that we did together?
Sorry we didn't get a chance to see each other at Sundance. I was there as a guest of Glamour magazine and was part of the "seance" at Zoom. Perhaps we will connect sometime in the future for a trip down Memory Lane???
Hugs to you!

i have worked for, now work for. i guarantee you that i would not have been on anyone's radar outside of the small circle of folks i've worked with/for and the exposure i had was quite limited. (jessica who? and 90% of HR still probably would say that too, i recognize!) i think social media has and will continue to expose me to a wider audience though, and that's what can be dangerous. i'm not saying i should close up shop or organizations shouldn't let their employees put their personal brands out there... i just think we need to be considerate in doing it though and think about the potential brain drain of having your "best and brightest" out there. you know?

Einer Elhauge is guest-blogging over at Volokh, and raising a bunch of interesting questions. One post draws a parallel between ELS and sabermetrics, leading one (clearly Boston-based) wag to ask, "if empirical legal studies are like sabermetrics, who is the legal equivalent of Joe Morgan?"
I'm not touching that one... But, in the spirit of the (baseball) season, I'd offer the following instead. Empirical researchers are taught early on to beware of selection bias -- drawing incorrect inferences from data which are nonrandomly sampled from a population. (An example would be concluding that early humans lived predominantly in caves, on the basis of finding paintings, remains of fire pits, and so forth there; because such artifacts are more likely to survive in caves than elsewhere, the available archaeological data are subject to selection bias). We also learn that there are ways of dealing with such data, including the class of "selection models" first developed by James Heckman.*
